چکیده

Ultraviolet imaging of the remnant of Supernova 1885 in M31 with the Hubble Space Telescope using the F255W filter on the WFPC2 reveals a dark spot of Fe II absorption at the remnant’s known position in the bulge of M31. The diameter of the absorbing spot is 0. 55 ± 0. 15, slightly smaller than, but consistent with, the 0. 70 ± 0. 05 diameter measured in the higher quality WFPC2 Ca II absorption image previously reported by us. The measured ratio of flux inside to outside SNR 1885 in the Fe II image is 0.24 ± 0.17, consistent with the ratio 0.33 ± 0.04 expected on the basis of a model fit to the previously obtained near-UV FOS spectrum. The observed depth of Fe II absorption suggests that Fe II is fully saturated, with an iron mass in the range MFe = 0.1–1.0M⊙. Besides Fe, ion species Mg I, Mg II, and Mn I probably make some contribution to the absorption from the SN 1885 remnant in the F255W image. Spectra of the Remnant of Sn 1885 in M 31

Near UV HST images of the remnant of SN 1885 (S And) in M31 show a 0. 70 ± 0. 05 diameter absorption disk silhouetted against M31’s central bulge, at SN 1885’s historically reported position. The disk’s size corresponds to a linear diameter of 2.5 ± 0.4 pc at a distance of 725 ±70 kpc, implying an average expansion velocity of 11000 ± 2000 kms over 110 years. Low-dispersion FOS spectra over 320...

THE CHEMICAL DISTRIBUTION IN A SUBLUMINOUS TYPE Ia SUPERNOVA: HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE IMAGES OF THE SN 1885 REMNANT

SN 1885 was a probable subluminous SN Ia that occurred in the bulge of the Andromeda galaxy, M31, at a projected location 1600 from the nucleus. Here we present and analyze Hubble Space Telescope images of the SN 1885 remnant seen in absorption against the M31 bulge via the resonance lines of Ca i, Ca ii, Fe i, and Fe ii. Viewed in Ca ii H and K line absorption, the remnant appears as a nearly ...

The Detailed Chemical Properties of M31 Star Clusters I. Fe, Alpha and Light Elements

We present ages, [Fe/H] and abundances of the alpha elements Ca I, Si I, Ti I, Ti II, and light elements Mg I, Na I, and Al I for 31 globular clusters in M31, which were obtained from high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR> 60) echelle spectra of their integrated light. All abundances and ages are obtained using our original technique for high resolution integrated light abundance ana...

Luminosity Indicators in the Ultraviolet Spectra of Type Ia Supernovae

We present a complete sample of International Ultraviolet Explorer and Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet (UV) spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) through 2004. We measure the equivalent width (EW) and blueshifted velocity of the minimum of the one strong UV feature, Fe II λ3250. We also quantify the slope of the near-UV spectra using a new parameter, the “UV ratio.” We find that the velocit...
